Specs Switch

The Specs Switch was designed and engineered by Dianne in 1994, while she worked at AbleNet. She was given the assignment to design a smaller version of their existing switch line.

The Product

Features

“The place-anywhere, attach-to-or-around-anything, versatile Specs Switch!”

Di’s first step was to call Occupational Therapists and Rehabilitation Engineers to find out more about what they wanted. Through many conversations, she found they wanted a smaller, more durable switch than was presently available but they wanted more than a small replica of their Jellybean switch.

Several people desired a wearable switch, or one which could be placed in the palm of someone’s hand, or attached to a wheelchair armrest or headrest. Some liked the idea of attaching with a flange, similar to the existing switches, but others wanted it smaller.

The solution Di came up with was a small switch with three different base plates, so it could be attached in a variety of ways. The strap plate and the stretchy Velcro strap provided allow people to strap it onto a wheelchair or bed-rail, or into someone’s palm.

The Specs switch is the most versatile and durable small switch available.

This switch has a 3.5 cm diameter activation surface and comes with three bases: Flange base, flush base, and strap adaptable base, making it the most flexible and versatile switch.

  • Use the flange base to attach to almost any surface, including AbleNet mounting systems
  • Use the space efficient flush base for clustering several switches together
  • The strap adaptable base makes it easy to mount around objects like headrests and armrests
  • Includes a 61cm (24”) strap

All AbleNet switches are:

  • Designed to provide tactile and audible feedback to the user
  • Designed for activation no matter where pressed
Who it's For

The Specs Switch can be attached in a variety of ways to provide the best access point for anyone with disabilities who uses switch access.
